Are influencers influential or are they just there to ‘chase the bag?’*. In episode 2 of the Student Outreach Podcast; Influencers and Breaking into the Industry the topic of influencers having easy access to opportunities is discussed.
We’ve seen the likes of many television stars and media personalities become popular after a viral moment, build up a following on social media platforms to then receiving brand deals, paid appearances and more. An example of this is Leigh-Anne Pinnock from the British girl group Little Mix not only hosting the 2021 MOBO Awards as well as starring in Christmas Romance Movie ‘Boxing Day’. Many celebrities and stars get first access to star in films and host at events with little acting / presenting experience because of the ‘clout’ that their name holds.
Broadcast and Digital Journalism students who have formed Student Outreach shared their opinions on this throughout the podcast. Overall, the verdict was that if they are good at what they do/ intend on doing, then why not? However, the problem is when influencers branch into something they have no passion for and are not good at. An example led by Charlie was TikToker Adisson Rae starring in a film. Although Clint made a very valid point stating that if the money is there then why not? Often, we forget many are trying to build up generational wealth and a status for themselves, where they will take any opportunity given to them. Does this still make it unfair for those who are continuously grafting and looking for work in a field they are extremely passionate about? Is it worth becoming an influencer by appearing on a reality TV show to build a reputable name to be given the opportunities looked for?
Being an ‘influencer’ has lost its initial meaning. Being able to influence the community and those around you in a positive way has been reconstructed into modelling for fast fashion clothing brands like Pretty Little Thing which is encouraging unethical labor practices. The podcast dives deeper into how the industry is “about 20% talent, 20% luck and 60% who you know” and ways to utilize your social media platform to create opportunities.
